  11. To use your Fax Machine and Fax Modem as a scanner you will need the
  12. following:
  13.  o  SCANNER.TXT (This text file)
  14.  o  SCANNER.BMP
  15.  o  FaxMail for Windows or FaxMail Network for Windows
  16.  o  Fax Modem
  17.  o  Fax Machine
  18.  o  9 volt Battery
  19.  o  1 Phone Wire (with a plug on both ends)
  20.  o  1 Red Jumper Wire (with an alligator clip on both ends)
  21.  o  1 Green Jumper Wire (with an alligator clip on both ends)
  22.  o  2 small Wire Nuts
  23.  o  2 150 ohm 1/4 Watt Resistors
  24.  o  Electrical Tape
  25.  
  26. Directions:
  27.  o  Print SCANNER.TXT
  28.  
  29.  o  Use MS-PAINT to print SCANNER.BMP

  31.  o  Install FaxMail on your computer
  32.  
  33.  o  Get a phone wire with a plug on both ends
  34.  o  Cut the phone wire in the center
  35.  o  Strip both green wires to 1/2" stripped
  36.  o  combined the two green wires with the other 150 ohm resistors and
  37.     wire-nut them together
  38.  o  Strip both red wires to 1/2" stripped
  39.  o  combined the two red wires with one of 150 ohm resistors and
  40.     wire-nut them together
  41.  o  Locate the green jumper wire with an alligator clip on both ends
  42.  o  Clip one end of the green jumper to the resistor that is connected
  43.     to the two green wires
  44.  o  Connect the other end of the green jumper wire to the + (positive)
  45.     side of the battery
  46.  o  Locate the red jumper wire with an alligator clip on both ends
  47.  o  Clip one end of the red jumper to the resistor that is connected to
  48.     the two red wires
  49.  o  Connect the other end of the red jumper wire to the - (negative)
  50.     side of the battery

  52.  o  Plug one end of the phone wire into the Fax Machine and the other
  53.     end into the Fax Modem
  54.  
  55.  o  Load FaxMail's Event Monitor
  56.  o  Place the to be scanned paper in the fax machine and send as usual
  57.     giving 5 as the phone number
  58.  o  Click the <Answer Now> button in the FaxMail Event Monitor
  59.  o  When the scan is done, FaxMail will notify you and you will be
  60.     able to <View>, <Print>, <Save>, <Move>, <etc> the fax
  61.  
  62. Note:
  63.  o  Do not strip the Black or Yellow Wire.  They are phone line 2.
  64.     Put tape on them.
  65.  
  66.  o  Be sure the bear wires are dressed and/or taped to avoid shorting.

  68.  o  You can use an 8v to 12 volt DC 50mA (or above) power supply
  69.     instead of the 9 volt battery if you will be using the scanner a
  70.     lot.  If you do, observing the polarity, put a 1000uf electrolytic
  71.     capacitor across the power supply.
